Primary Hip System

ANTHOLOGY Primary Hip System

Product Information

ANTHOLOGY is a primary Hip System that is an improvement on the designs of other clinically successful Mueller "flat" tapered stem designs. This non-cemented, broach only system provides exceptional fit and stability in all types of bone and offers superior ROM. With optimal stem geometry and the widest range of sizes, the ANTHOLOGY system offers the ability to match all femur types. In combination with our proven neck design and our R3 Acetabular portfolio, you, the surgeon, have the ability to restore the patient’s biomechanics and natural range of motion. Not every surgical approach is the same, so not all instrumentation should be the same. The ANTHOLOGY system is the first femoral implant to have integrated instruments designed for specific minimally invasive surgical hip approaches.

Features Include:

  • Non-cemented, broach only system
  • Excellent fit and rotational stability in all bone types
  • Reduced distal width helping to prevent distal locking
  • Up to 20% shorter than other similar stem designs
  • Optimum circulotrapezoidal neck geometry
  • Ideal for minimally invasive hip approaches

Design and Technology

ANTHOLOGY Design and Technology

The ANTHOLOGY Primary Hip System offers more size options-14 different sizes, plus dual offset options for each size. Design innovations - such as reduced distal widths and an optimum neck geometry- allows you to more closely match the patient's anatomy for a better fit and better fixation.

ANTHOLOGY, is a bone conserving hip system that allows a precision fit in any type of femur and avoids premature distal locking of the stem. Its flat taper design and procedure-specific instrumentation help deliver exceptional patient fit.

Stem length and distal geometry

The length and distal width of many hip systems may prevent you from achieving the maximum metaphyseal fit while avoiding diaphyseal fixation. The ANTHOLOGY system was designed to grow in consistent 1.5mm increments and incorporates shorter stem lengths and slimmer distal widths in relation to the proximal widths. This design allows you to select a larger and more appropriate proximal size.

Anatomically correct neck lengths

Many competitive systems feature stems with comparatively long neck lengths. This length makes it difficult for you to choose proper stem sizes, make conservative neck resections and restore proper leg length. The ANTHOLOGY system incorporates consistent 131° neck angles, dual offsets and more appropriate neck lengths that have proven to ensure proper restoration of leg length and biomechanics in the vast majority of patients.* Also, the ANTHOLOGY system's constant 131o neck angle helps restore offset without affecting leg length. *Bourne RB, Rorabeck CH. POROUS PLUS HA coating uses ROUGHCOAT porous coating technology with an HA application.

ROUGHCOAT porous coating

The sintered-bead ROUGHCOAT porous coating, manufactured from commercially pure titanium, has demonstrated several advantages over plasma-sprayed or simple textured surfaces:

  • The irregularly layered beads of the ROUGHCOAT porous coating enhance the 3-D interlock of the prosthesis.
  • Studies have shown stems with sintered beads result in two to three times less polyethelene wear in the acetabular component than stems with plasma sprayed surfaces. 1
  • Sintered beads have been shown to have greater bond strength than plasma-sprayed surfaces or diffusion bonded wire surfaces. 2,3,4
  • Mechanical testing has shown the optimal pore size for bone ingrowth to be between 50 and 400 microns. 1

A 50-micron thick layer of HA is applied to the ROUGHCOAT porous coating. A thinner HA layer can be discontinuous and cause a loss of mechanical integrity. Conversely, a thicker coating is likely to have lower attachment strength, leading to cracking and delamination under fatigue loads. The optimum thickness of HA has been shown to be 50 microns. 5

ANTHOLOGYHip components are indicated for individuals undergoing primary and revision surgery where other treatments or devices have failed in rehabilitating hips damaged as a result of trauma or noninflammatory degenerative joint disease (NIDJD) or any of its composite diagnoses of:

  • Osteoarthritis
  • Avascular necrosis
  • Traumatic arthritis
  • Slipped capital epiphysis
  • Fused hip
  • Fracture of the pelvis and diastrophic variant.

Hip components are also indicated for inflammatory degenerative joint disease including:

  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Arthritis secondary to a variety of diseases and anomalies and congenital dysplasia
  • Treatments of nonunion
  • Femoral neck fracture
  • Trochanteric fractures of the proximal femur with head involvement that are unmanageable using other techniques
  • Endoprosthesis, femoral osteotomy
  • Girdlestone resection
  • Fracture-dislocation of the hip
  • Correction of deformity

What material is the ANTHOLOGY stem made of?

Titanium alloy (Ti-6Al-4V)

What is the size difference between the broach and the implant?

0.125mm proximal portion per side or 0.25mm total Is ANTHOLOGY a broach only system? Yes

Is there direct anterior instrumentation?

Yes. The ANTHOLOGY system is offered with single offset and dual offset broach handles and an offset stem inserter.

Does ANTHOLOGY have HA availble?

Yes. ANTHOLOGY is available in RoughCoat porous or RoughtCoat porous plus HA, proximally.

Since ANTHOLOGY is a non-cemented stem, what is the groove on the distal stem used for?

The groove is carried over from the original Prof. Mueller design. Although the original Mueller was a cemented stem, the same is true. The groove provides more surface area for contact and therefore increased stability.
